MTTR±MATTER
/ (ˈmætə) /
from the Latin Materia. What objects are made of; subject and/or content of written works, main message; substance; materialize: being in the process of becoming, taking shape.
Scale
We work across scales at the intersection of architecture and urban design. The landscape and/or urban context in which a building is located informs the way we conceive of interior spaces and even the smallest constructive details. Solutions – regardless of scale – are developed in a pragmatic, transparent and iterative process, enabling architects as well as non-architects to understand how design decisions are made. Our interests and areas of focus include:
Wood Construction
We work intensely with wood, a sustainable and renewable building material. Found above all in our residential and educational projects, we deploy wood in the form of mass timber as well as a framing material in wood-frame construction. Our design process is directly influenced by our interest in exploring and exploiting the possibilities of this versatile material - and our desire to make its qualities tangible in the final built form.
New Workplaces
For our commercial and office buildings, we develop environments that accommodate technical requirements and adapt flexibly to modern working methods. We pay particular attention to shared community zones, which are becoming increasingly important as communication spaces that span the gap between the office and the conference room. Our work in this area is both research-oriented (for example, exhibit design for Messe Frankfurt), as well as applied in the form of built projects.
Character
Built space should be designed to be easy to use, efficient to operate and maintain, and simple to construct. But this alone is not enough: a well-designed space should inspire. We see it as our mission to kindle inspiration through the design of distinctive and memorable spaces.
